Ben Byrne and Miyuki Jokiranta‘s new audio work Whalefall has premiered on Austrian radio ORF 1’s Kunst zum Hören.

The piece was commissioned in 2024 and broadcast in early 2025 before being made available on the program’s podcast.

Whalefall listens to the stories of leviathans, mythic and real. These giants of the deep swim through our imagination, as sea monsters to be feared and tamed, the power of the state as conceived by Thomas Hobbes, and echoes of natural beauty. Pitch bends with depth and pressure and sub bass shudders as we dive deep.

The work is part of ongoing research into ecological sonic practices and how they can be sustaining for more-than-human worlds.
